Block and Timing in Slay the Spire

Block is temporary

Block absorbs damage from the next enemy attack. It does not carry to later turns, so hoarding it is pointless.

You gain block by playing block cards or through certain powers. The number shown is all you get until you add more.

Place block before the hit

The enemy acts after your turn ends. Block you gain during your turn is still up when that attack lands.

Spend block early if you must, but know the enemy intent first. Guessing wrong leaves you bare on a big hit.

Block versus damage

Every point of block is a point of health you did not lose. Against a heavy hitter, block beats a small attack.

When the enemy will not attack, skip block and push damage. Wasted block is wasted energy.

Frequently asked questions

When does block disappear?

Block drops to zero at the start of your next turn. It protects you during the enemy's attack, then it is gone.

Should I block or attack?

Block when the enemy is about to hit hard, attack when it is not. Read the enemy intent before you commit energy.

Does block stack in Slay the Spire?

Block adds up within a turn. Play two block cards and you hold the total until your next turn starts and it resets.
