How this tier list is ranked
The best mutations in Dead Cells are judged on how much they change a run, not on how strong they look on paper. A mutation earns a high tier when it decides fights, survives a mistake, or fits a colour you already build around.
You carry three mutation slots. Each pick competes with two others, so a slot spent on a perk you rarely trigger is a slot lost. This list ranks mutations by that opportunity cost.
The criteria behind every row:
- Run impact: how much the effect changes how you clear a biome.
- Trigger rate: how often the condition fires in normal play.
- Colour fit: whether the perk rewards the scroll colour it matches.
- Slot cost: whether it earns one of your three slots over the alternatives.
- Safety: whether it keeps a run alive after a mistake.
The full mutation table
Every mutation below is ranked on those five criteria. The tier shows where the perk sits once your scrolls are invested.
| Tier | Mutation | Why it ranks there |
|---|---|---|
| S | Combo | A Brutality pick that raises melee damage with each hit in a chain, so a clean combo snowballs. |
| S | Vengeance | A Brutality pick that turns a hit taken into a damage window, so even a trade still pays. |
| S | Predator | A Brutality pick that hides you after a kill, so a crowd loses track of you between swings. |
| S | Barbed Tips | A Tactics pick that adds damage over time to ranged hits, so a kiting run keeps chipping a target. |
| S | Necromancy | A Survival pick that heals on each kill, sustaining a green run without spending flask charges. |
| S | Blind Faith | A Survival pick that cuts skill cooldowns on a parry, so a defensive habit feeds faster offence. |
| A | What Doesn’t Kill Me | A Survival pick that heals after a parry, so a blocked hit gives health back. |
| A | Support | A Tactics pick that boosts deployed skills, so turrets and traps hit harder. |
| A | Point Blank | A Tactics pick that rewards firing up close, suiting an aggressive ranged build. |
| A | Networking | A Tactics pick that lifts deployable damage, stacking with a turret-heavy loadout. |
| A | Counterattack | A Survival pick that raises damage after a parry, opening a short counter window. |
| A | Kill Rhythm | A Survival pick that rewards mixing melee and ranged, so a hybrid loadout gains damage. |
| A | Instinct of the Master of Arms | A Tactics pick that cuts cooldowns on a critical hit, which suits fast weapons. |
| A | Berserker | A Brutality pick that trades safety for speed and damage at low health. |
| A | Frenzy | A Brutality pick that speeds attacks after a melee kill, so a cleared crowd feeds the next fight. |
| A | Open Wounds | A Brutality pick that adds bleeding to melee hits, so damage continues after a swing. |
| B | Tranquility | A Tactics pick that rewards avoiding damage, so a clean run gains a steady bonus. |
| B | Recovery | A Survival pick that heals over time after a hit, softening the cost of a mistake. |
| B | Scheme | A Brutality pick that boosts the next melee strike after a skill, so it needs a skill in rotation. |
| B | Extended Healing | A Survival pick that spreads flask healing over a longer window, trading speed for total health. |
| B | Gastronomy | A Survival pick that improves the value of food, so it matters only where food drops. |
| B | Heart of Ice | A Survival pick that rewards killing frozen enemies, so it needs a freeze source first. |
| C | Ygdar Orus Li Ox | A colourless pick that survives one killing blow, but it holds a slot for a rare event. |
| C | Emergency Triage | A colourless pick that adds a protective effect when a flask is drunk at low health. |
| C | Masochist | A colourless pick that softens trap damage, useful only in hazard-heavy rooms. |
S-tier mutations
An S-tier mutation rewrites how a run plays. You pick the rest of your build around it.
- Combo turns a steady melee chain into rising damage, so staying on one target pays off.
- Vengeance converts a hit taken into a short damage window, which rewards a player who keeps attacking.
- Predator hides you after a kill, so a crowd loses track of you between swings.
- Barbed Tips adds damage over time to ranged hits, so a kiting run keeps chipping a target.
- Necromancy heals on each kill, which sustains a green run without spending flask charges.
- Blind Faith cuts skill cooldowns on a parry, turning a defensive habit into faster offence.
A-tier mutations
An A-tier mutation is strong and easy to trigger. It improves a run without demanding a rare drop or a perfect setup.
- What Doesn’t Kill Me heals after a parry, so a blocked attack restores health instead of costing it.
- Support boosts the damage of your deployed skills, so turrets and traps hit harder.
- Point Blank rewards fighting up close, which suits an aggressive ranged build.
- Networking lifts the damage of your deployables, stacking with a turret-heavy run.
- Counterattack raises your damage after a parry, opening a short counter window.
- Kill Rhythm rewards mixing melee and ranged, so a hybrid loadout gains damage.
- Instinct of the Master of Arms cuts cooldowns on a critical hit, which suits fast weapons.
- Berserker trades safety for speed and damage at low health, a high-risk pick for a steady hand.
- Frenzy speeds up your attacks after a melee kill, so a cleared crowd feeds the next fight.
- Open Wounds adds bleeding to melee hits, so damage continues after a swing.
B-tier mutations
A B-tier mutation works, but a stronger option usually fills the slot. Take it when the others do not fit your colour.
- Tranquility rewards avoiding damage, so a clean run gains a steady bonus.
- Recovery heals you over time after a hit, softening the cost of a mistake.
- Scheme boosts your next melee strike after a skill, which needs a skill in the rotation.
- Extended Healing spreads flask healing over a longer window, trading speed for total health.
- Gastronomy improves the value of food, so it matters only where food drops.
- Heart of Ice rewards killing frozen enemies, so it needs a freeze source first.
Best mutations by colour
Each colour rewards a different habit. Pick mutations that match the scroll stat you raise.
- Brutality rewards fast melee, so Combo, Vengeance and Open Wounds all scale with frequent hits.
- Tactics rewards ranged control, so Barbed Tips, Support and Point Blank fit a kiting playstyle.
- Survival rewards patience, so Necromancy, Blind Faith and What Doesn’t Kill Me suit a shield build.
Best mutations for beginners
A beginner mutation fires without perfect timing. Each pick below helps a player still learning enemy patterns.
- Necromancy heals on a kill, so a beginner recovers health by clearing a room.
- Predator hides you after a kill, giving you a moment to reposition.
- Recovery heals over time after a hit, so a mistake is not final.
- What Doesn’t Kill Me rewards a block you were going to attempt anyway.
Mutations to avoid on high Boss Cells
A mutation built for a low-difficulty habit stops paying off higher up. On high Boss Cells, one mistake can end the run.
- Berserker asks you to fight at low health, which is where a high Boss Cell run ends.
- Scheme needs a skill in the rotation, so it wastes a slot if you rarely press one.
- Gastronomy depends on food drops, and food is scarce on the hardest routes.
