The shape of a run
Risk of Rain 2 is a shooter roguelike built on a repeating loop. You drop onto a stage with a survivor, fight monsters for gold, spend that gold on chests, and move to the next stage.
Nothing carries between runs. Every death sends you back to the survivor select screen with an empty inventory.
The loop in order
A stage follows the same six beats.
- Land and read the terrain while the first monsters spawn.
- Kill monsters and collect the gold they drop.
- Open chests to turn gold into items.
- Find the teleporter and activate it.
- Hold the zone while the teleporter charges and its boss fights you.
- Step on the teleporter to reach the next stage.
The teleporter is the exit and the biggest fight of the stage at once. That double role shapes how you spend your time.
Difficulty climbs with the clock
The director raises the threat level as time passes. More elites appear, and monsters gain health and damage. Your power grows through items, so the race is items against time.
A slow, thorough stage can leave you richer but weaker against the enemies. A fast stage keeps the pressure down but skips loot.
Items are the build
There is no skill tree. Your build is the pile of items you collected. Some items boost damage, some boost movement, some heal, and some bend the rules in odd ways.
Because items stack, the order you collect them rarely matters. The total does.
Continue with the director and difficulty or jump to time versus loot.
